Vagante is a 2D platformer based around perma death and procedurally generated levels, similar to the game Spelunky but somewhat more action oriented.
The whole purpose of entering the dungeon is to make it through the random assortment of goodies and death and past the final floor to receive your reward of unfathomable treasure!
The more you progress, the more dangerous the dungeon becomes and the more you have to think to be able to make it to the next door.
''Do I need this or is mine better?''
''What is this thing? that's pretty cool!''
''Oh god, it won't come off! I NEED A SCROLL!!!''
''That things probably going to ki...''
''Oh...''
''...''
It has an old school look to it with a lot depth and colour which, in my opinion, make it a very appealing game visually.
Sometimes the colour is masked by the fact that you can't bloody see because of how dark it can be but that is something I find quite appealing too, the darkness can obscure your vision to some tiny details (or obvious ones depending on how good your eyes are) which could offer a well needed boon in dire times, or really set you back in a variety of ways.
There are many ways in which the game can slow you down or make life easier and it's your job to figure out the best way of using what the dungeon offers and getting to the next door as well as always thinking ahead. If something seems really really good, hold onto it even if your gear seems better because it might actually help on the next floor or a few floors later. (it also might be useless to you but you have control over what you do with it.)
It's not a very forgiving game if I'm being honest but it is a fair game, I don't feel like I have ever been killed by something cheap and impossible.
I find loot, get a few steps further, and try again. and again. and then one more time... and I can't complain because I die doing silly things or just being bad. I'm not very good at this game but I keep trying despite this.
It's fun. there's something enjoyable about getting rekt on a regular basis until I overcome the trial laid out before me.
You may overcome it because the dungeon has been nice and good items and spawns have been given to you, or you might be in the zone and focusing heavily on anything and everything that could cause even one more damage to you and clearing it before it becomes a problem.
But given both options, the sense of accomplishment was a good feeling and it made me want to see how far I could get.
''Maybe I could get past the next level as well, since I can move around more thanks to those god send of a pair of boots'' and then you move through the door, rest up, jump into the fray and you're back at the entrance staring at the character cart because you jumped down on the floor boss without realizing and panic yourself onto a nice set of spikes.
Okay so I hit it pretty hard when I play it. one more game just isn't enough to satisfy me, especially when I keep getting fed my own tears. but doesn't that say something about it?
The game is insanely fun for those who enjoy these types of games (if not addictive) and the more you play, the more you learn and the more you realize your own silly mistakes as you progress.
Doesn't stop you from repeating them though...
I've been rambling on a little bit now, so I'll focus on some of the finer points and things to take note of before this gets too long.
There are several classes to choose from when you start a dungeon crawl which allows you a variety of ways to play the game as well as just making it up on the fly because you haven't found what you were hoping to get when you chose the archer and have to improvise.
There are traps, a nice lively assortment of monsters/enemies to encounter, secret area's which could contain shiny things to decorate your person with or it could contain a nice way to lose the last 3 hit points you were desperately trying to save and there are also some friendly and challenging floor bosses which add a little bit more of a challenge if you want a rewarding experience or you can just ignore them and hope your gear will suffice.
If you search the levels hard enough you may even find little bonuses to take through each door to give you a little one time boost or extra resources.
There is also a save mechanic between each door so that those who don't have a lot of time to sit down and play can save their progress and come back to it at a later time. it's also good for taking a break when you've been at it too long and need to do something else but don't want to start from scratch next time.
I feel like I'm forgetting something important...
Oh yeah! It has Co-op Multiplayer. Local and Online for up to 4 players.
So if you need some help or just really want to play it with a friend from a different chair or even country then go ahead!
I'm going to leave it there though because there isn't much else I can say without spoiling the content for you and I'd rather you give it a try yourself if it interests you at all.
When I first picked it up I couldn't put it back down and I ended up throwing all of my spare time into it. (10 hours in on my first day...)
I think that's enough to say I had a lot of fun.
Bye for now!
Rhiyous.
