In the final Smash Bros. Direct before its release come December, Nintendo pulled all the punches with new fighters, a new mode and more!
With about a month until its release on December 7th, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate held its final Nintendo Direct and revealed all characters - 74 of them in fact - that will be available on release with the base game. The final two?:
Ken - Street Fighter’s blonde fighter joins his rival Ryu on the Nintendo Franchise. Sporting a look based on his Super Street Fighter II Turbo days Ken is slightly faster than Ryu and also has a different variation of the Hadoken.
Incineroar - The final evolution of the Fire-starter in Pokémon Sun and Moon is also the final fighter to make its way to Ultimate. Incineroar comes to battle equipped with pro-wrestling based moves and his Z-Move from the Pokémon games as its Final Smash - the Max Malicious Moonsault.
Fighters weren’t the only thing announced though, as Spirits were announced. Spirits are fighters or characters that lost their physical form and became “Spirits”. The player will collect Spirits through various battles and challenges and equip them to their fighter in the form of Primary and Support Spirits in order to boost their stats and gain an advantage on their opponent. The player will also be able to level up these Spirits by using them and therefore unlock more powerful forms of the Spirits equipped and make thousands of combinations in order to get the most out of their fighter.
DLC was also confirmed to be in development for the game bringing all new fighters (no Echo Fighters) to the game alongside new stages and music tracks until 2020. Players can buy a single set that includes one fighter, one stage and various music tracks for $5.99 or buy the Fighter Pass which includes 5 fighters, 5 stages and all the music tracks for $24.99.
Piranha Plant will also be available as a special fighter for those who pre-order or buy the game until January 31st, 2019. The iconic enemy from the Super Mario franchise will join his foes a bit later after the game’s release in February 2019. Nintendo have confirmed that the character will also be available later as a DLC purchase.
Masahiro Sakurai, the series director, also touched on Amiibo confirming that every new fighter in the game; including DLC will get a new Amiibo figure with the first set releasing on December 7th, 2018 and the third set with an open release window in 2019. Wireless and Online Play were also features that were tweaked; “For Fun” and “For Glory” are a thing of the past instead Ultimate’s matchmaking being based on three factors, Prefered Rules, Global Smash Power and Proximity.
Amongst all the craziness, perhaps the most intriguing thing shown was the new Adventure Mode called World Of Light. Not much was shown apart from a very sneak-peaky trailer where fighters lose their physical form and transform into Spirits and it’s up to the player to bring them back.
