I’m going to start this off by saying that if you haven’t watched the the first couple of seasons of Tokyo Ghoul then you we be very lost in some of the plot in this Anime. I don’t think you won’t be able to piece the components together but I still recommend that you watch the originals. With that out the way I will say that Tokyo Ghoul re: is pretty good. There is a heavy focus on the new characters with enough screen time for some of the previous characters in the series. You get that same feeling of when you have met some old friends who you haven’t spoken to in a while.
The animation is as stellar as always and the battle music feels like it’s come straight out of a Streets of Rage fan album which I am all for. The characters themselves are all pretty likeable, a little one dimensional for 2 or 3 of them but they aren’t an annoyance and neither to they take away too much from the Anime itself. The story is very much what you would expect from Tokyo Ghoul, investigators stopping the “evil” and “superior” species but a select few showing empathy towards them.
The pacing of the story isn’t too slow but probably not as quick as you are used to if you have started watching Anime when the 13 episode seasons are the norm. It gives you plenty of time to devour and digest what is going on. Now onto my little gripes with this season. The fight scenes seem very minimalistic compared to the original seasons.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I remember the originals being more colourful (except for the censored versions) and much more flashy. My guess would be that they had to tone down the amount of blood and gore to stop those censorships happening. Also the ghouls so far in this Anime bar 1 or 2 seems to have been either significantly nerfed or the investigators have been doing some intensive work in the gym during the off season and have powered up massively. So the fear of the ghouls has been somewhat taken away. It makes sense as you wouldn’t want to watch from the perspective of everyone dying but I don’t know, it still seems like a little more of a struggle would have gone down well.
Enough of my complaints on to the rating. Based on the first 8 episodes I would give Tokyo Ghoul an 8 /10. It’s not as strong as the first season but I am still pretty hooked on this season. If only to see the direction the end of the season takes. If you haven’t already go watch the original seasons and then come to this one. You won’t regret it.
