I’m going to do my best to not sound like a fanboy but I will be a little lenient on myself. My Hero Academia is exactly what I want from a Superhero Anime or movie. The superpowers themselves should be a secondary element. The stars should be the characters. I don’t know what it is about Western superheroes but each one has a single personality trait but either amazing gadgets or an overpowered ability. My Hero Academia throws the super stereotypes out the window and focuses so much on character development it’s incredible. Within the first few episodes of season 1 you will get sucked into the life and struggles of Izuku Midoriya without realising it.
The story really tugs at your heart strings not just by making you sickeningly sad but also making you feel vulnerable and weak. How can I sing My Hero’s praises when it makes you feel this way? Easy, because as Izuku gets stronger so do your emotions. When he feels hopeful you get filled with motivation. When you see his passion for his mentor All Might! You slowly realise how you have that same passion in watching Izuku’s growth.
It’s not just Izuku that has this development. Many secondary characters have their own issues and ambitions which resonate with you. There’s not a single character you can outright hate, this includes the villains. Every one has their own reason for wanting what they do. For better or for worse. Moving away from the bulk of the story. The animations are outstanding from the delightfully twisted faces, to the ridiculously detailed battle scenes.
There is so much attention to detail during the fights that it’s easy to miss most of it. By no means is it overwhelming either, it just makes you want to go back and watch the scenes again. The music fits the scenes perfectly, while My Hero doesn’t have the strongest soundtrack, it matches the mood exceptionally. What’s my biggest complaint with My Hero? The fact I have to wait a week to watch the next episode.
Seriously though I cannot recommend this enough. The battles and story while follow similar patterns have plenty of unpredictability to them as well. This is far from the cookie cutter story you would expect to see.
I’m going to give My Hero Academia a 9.5/10. While Izuku has an incredible quirk, the greatest quirk is held by the Anime itself. A quirk called empathy. Every season really does go beyond. Plus Ultra!!!
