Monster Hunter has been around for quite some time now, ever since I was a kid,
and when I heard that it would be coming back to big screen on the PS4 I couldn't help get excited about it.
I've always been a fan of the scaling difficulty and the constant push for better gear and Monster Hunter has always had that going for it.
The story this time around is still somewhat similar to the rest of the Monster Hunter games.
Usually it's a call to arms from a town or village in desperate need of a local hunter to execute some local pests and dig up some trouble, but this time around you've been rallied across the ocean chasing a mountain of a beast to new lands as an A-Lister from the guild,
joined by your fluffy little palico friend and a new type of guildmarm named Handler (who just really loves to talk) in order to research the new world and it's monstrous inhabitants.
The Main HUB itself has an interesting new twist to it as well.
Instead of the usual 4 man online hubs, you can have up to 16 people in the HUB at one time and can switch in and out of quests at will or when there is a free slot to grab.
(Sadly you can only see other hunters in the Guild Hall)
You can also take advantage of the new SOS system and fire a flare up to ask for help or just jump into an ongoing quest and get in the way of random people or unbeknownst friends with your uncoordinated uppercuts and mindless flailing.
The usual experience but with a few added bonuses just to change up the way you approach the quest board a bit.
The weapon system has also had some changes made to it, in the form of new combo's and power attacks to chain to or from.
It doesn't change the playing field massively (unless you spend your day true charging with a Great Sword) but it does add a bit more depth and character to each weapon and adds more variety to how you play with each of them.
There's also a new Slinger Tool which was added to the game to make moving around and fighting a little more fluid and interesting.
Like firing pods and consumables, climbing walls faster or slinging your way to the cieling for a full charge arial slam and possibly a mount.
It's pretty fun.
Now onto some of the more polished aspects of World compared to the rest of the series.
Moving up to the newer gen consoles and taking advantage of what's to offer, Capcom have managed to make a beautiful looking game with interesting free roam (loading screen free) environments and a nice assortment of monsters which can prove to be either awkward and unreasonable or just make the hunt that much more interesting.
You can actively avoid and repel invading monsters using the environment if you only want the one you're after or you can go mental and just bring the pain to whatever pops up if you feel you can take it.
Wandering around the wild locations and taking in the sights and watching the local environment change around you when you first jump in is a sight to behold.
Everything looks new and fresh, even older monsters like Rathian and Rathalos have a new shine to them with new textures and detail to make them seem more menacing and glorious than they once were.
It's just a more visually appealing game than the rest and so it should be.
But, there are a few downsides in my opinion.
I've been playing these games for years now. I was hooked ever since I picked up Monster Hunter on the PS2 and I've always enjoyed its challenging nature and the different ways you can fight offered to you via your load outs. But I don't find much challenge in Monster Hunter World.
This might not be the same for everyone but personally, I feel the game really let itself down with the lack of end game content overall.
I'm primarily getting at G Rank here, I'm sure a lot of people felt the same when they hit end game. Without it, the game just doesn't have enough to keep me going.
High rank just isn't enough of a challenge for me and neither are most of the Tempered Monsters, which is a shame because just that would have given me so many more hours of enjoyment.
I also didn't care much for Zorah Magdaros or Xeno'Jiiva either. It was nice to see a new Elder Dragon Reminiscent of Lao-Shan Lung in scale and a great evil to triumph over but neither of them were very thrilling fights.
I get that they have to appeal to a broader range of audience and they want to introduce it to people who haven't played the series before but I don't feel like there's enough.
I know that they've recently added the mighty Pickle (DevilJho) into the mix to spice things up a bit but right now, he just isn't enough.
I want more variants, more old and new monsters and more of a reason to keep playing.
Something closer to MH4U would be nice.
One day, I may come back to the game and see a massive update with G-Rank and new Elder Dragons and area's to face off in, but for now I think I'm pretty much spent on World.
I will say, however, it's still worth it's money.
Even more so, to those who haven't played the game before and are looking for a new experience or genre of game to indulge in.
You will still get hours out of this game while learning and understanding the mechanics and as a bonus, you get to forage through the beautiful world Capcom have built up for us.
See you all later.
Rhiyous.
