I've been really enjoying this manga recently.
It has a pretty simple beginning which always melds well with me because when it's too convoluted or all over the place it really puts me off. I expect the entire story to be the same and I hate trying to piece a story together myself.
I'd rather understand the situation and the character from the beginning in an organized way and be able to follow the progression which, I personally believe, is best kept simple and informative.
Anyways...
Our story is about a 34 year old NEET who was thrown out by his relatives on the day of his parents funeral.
After wandering the streets penniless and now homeless he thinks about his life and how he's spent it wasting away all alone, separated from the existence of social culture and how if he ever got another chance he would live life to it's fullest and experience all there is without any more regrets. But, y'know, this second chance has to come from somewhere doesn't it?
As he witnesses a group of school kids arguing in the street he notices a speeding truck careering straight for them. His last actions were to save the life of these three kids as he flings them out of the way and takes the truck head on all the while wondering why THIS was his last experience.
''Mine was no proper life.'' ''How stupid...''
As his life fades to black, it then began anew as he stares his new family in the face for the first time as Rudeus Greyrat, Son to Paul and Zenith.
His new life in His new world full of new experiences and new wonders all waiting for Him to discover.
As with most Isekai the setting is pretty basic.
He still retains memories of his past life along with all of his knowledge and understanding, but this also brings over his fears and anxiety which have been ingrained in his existence. The fears and the anxiety which drove him to becoming a NEET in the first place.
Plunged into a world of sword and magic filled with monsters, fantasy races, discrimination and shady coordinated groups with a whole plethora of ''daily life in a fantasy world'' stuff.
Not much different from most but the world is presented quite well.
They make up for the repetitive setting by incorporating it into the story in an enjoyable and easy to understand way, walking you through it by showing off locals and mixing in both major and minor characters to show diversity and to tell us more about the world at the same time.
Nothing is rushed and they aren't trying to get from A to B just to get an arch over and done with. They want you to enjoy the adventure, understand it and come to terms with what's going on, with what our protagonist is doing and with why he is doing it.
You get to see his emotions as he himself comes to terms with his own decisions and how it affects himself and those around him.
After all he is still a child, but because of his knowledge and understanding from his past life, his mind was sharp and aware causing people to put more pressure on him.
He shows confidence and acts arrogant because of his knowledge and ability but at the same time, knew as much as a child would about this new world all while adding more to his own burden.
They aren't shy when it comes to telling a story and I find myself always trying to guess what's going to happen next instead of just waiting to see.
To go along with what I was saying earlier about characters.
There is a huge selection of characters who you can pick favorites from and even some minor characters and Meat Bags have a personality of their own and can be seen multiple times interacting with different groups of some of the more notable of the cast.
There are also some who don't really get much screen time and are there just to give you more insight into what's going on or how the some characters think.
But they are still there and they have a reason and a purpose other than to make some noise and cause an uproar only to disappear just as quick. (There are some of these guys though. I mean... there has to be some sacrifices.)
The humor between some characters gave me quite the laugh as well, whether is be their mannerisms and personality or just some things they come out with, it's always nice to have a good giggle to change the pace a bit.
Some things also went straight over the top of my head but what can you do, eh?
It never broke my immersion though
nor did it take anything away from the experience.
(I did spend quite some time figuring out what I missed though...)
All in all though, I'm thoroughly enjoying the read and can't wait for the next chapter.
I'll leave it there for now but I hope you go check it out and let me know your thoughts on it.
Rhiyous.
