(If you are adverse to violence and gore or other themes of this nature, then this one may not be for you.)
So... Lately, I've been keeping up to date with a manga known as ''Goblin Slayer''.
It's been an interesting read so far so I thought I'd share my thoughts on it and get your opinions.
but where do we begin?
The story?
The Setting?
How about the main protagonist?
What about the main antagonist, huh?
Okay, yeah! Story seems like the perfect place to start.
Well, the story is about a young priestess starting out as an adventurer and a man named Goblin Slayer who's life is spent on slaying goblins.
go figure, huh?
The setting is somewhat basic though, but I feel that's made up for by how they use it and the story around the protagonist.
It's set in a fantasy world and this world is structured around the usual fantasy races and adventurers and the likes doing pest control for money; the bigger the pest, the better the reward.
Simple to follow, but there's a twist...
one of our protagonists, our star of the show, is a Silver rank adventurer who spends his time laying waste to goblin settlements and small packs alike, as if they were his mortal enemy but also his prey, for no extra merit, coin and nothing but scorn from other adventurers.
I wonder why? Well, you'll find out if you do read it but for now, let's move on.
It's a somewhat dark manga with quite a bit of violence and gore which may turn some people off of it as well as some scenes which are brutal in ways and may be hard for some people to read through but there are also scenes of a more light hearted nature when there isn't much going on, camp fires with stories and light jabs between comrades and moments in homes or at the guild when there aren't goblins causing all kinds of horrific acts.
I'd rather not be too specific in order to not spoil anything or put you off reading more into this but I do advise to view at your own discretion if you are concerned with the darker side of the story.
There's a somewhat decent selection of cast members as well as the all so needed meat bags to take up room (sacrificial pawns) and to expand some of the larger, more action intensive or suspenseful and emotionally moving scenes.
I say emotionally moving as in scenes which would show a sense of camaraderie and passion towards a common goal, groups overcoming impending doom or
bearing the weight of something as a whole even if they hate each other.
Even if most of them are meatbags, they still wanted to stand by everyone. You go, Guys!
The less expendable characters on the other hand show diversity when together with others as well as some of the usual cliche characters like the ''wanna be rivals'' and the tough or gaudy selection who like to think they're mightier than the hammer that forged them.
You have possible love interests among groups and others who seem to offer both story investment and fan service.
They all make to set scenes and help define and direct our friends go-getter-Noob Priestess and oblivious Goblin Slayer towards their goals, with some less than stellar interruptions and learning experiences along the way.
Now I do have to mention that this is an ongoing manga and you may get somewhat impatient waiting on the ''monthly uploads'' as it were but I don't mind this so much, each chapter at least makes it feel like it's going somewhere but if you are of the impatient among us then you may have to find something else to tide you over during the wait, if it interests you at all, that is.
I would give it a read if it interests you in any way though.
Can't hurt to try, right?
It has a lot of depth and a different outlook on the usual Fantasy Adventure manga which was what originally captured my interest and I've continued to enjoy it to it's most recent update.
I'm going to leave it there though, but if you do read it, let me know what you think! I'm interested to know opinions and if you agree with me or think I'm full of it!
Signing out.
Rhiyous.
