Has something ruffled your feathers? Well toucan play at that game! Did that quack you up? Or are you not emused… Well that’s hawkward! But on a serious note, I was just checking the Humble Bundle Trove when I noticed a little game called Copoka. It’s basically an open world atmospheric indie game in which you take control of a bird, take to the skies and aim to build up your nest… You’re probably thinking the same as me, ‘why on earth would anyone play that?’ And to be frank, I have no idea what compelled me to play it.

But Copoka is much more than that. Priced on Steam at a full price of £3.99 or regional equivalent, you are to explore the gorgeous, colourful and lively totalitarian city state in search of twigs for your nest. Still sound boring? Well maybe so, but there’s more. As you explore the city, you can eavesdrop on the conversations of the locals to unlock the full story of the city. I would love to go into detail, but due to the game only being between 1 and 2 hours long to collect and listen to all available conversations, I think I’ll leave that for you to uncover if you decide to give it a go.

The story itself is fascinating. As you fly through different provinces, from the rich to the poor, from the healthy to the unhealthy you uncover the corruption that the citizens are facing and how they are forced to combat it. Being a bird, you are able to safely unravel the whole story as it unfolds. Also, it really makes you think how simple life is as a bird. (As long as you don’t mind a shorter life and the potential predators) This game really emphasises and portrays freedom from a bird’s point of view. From gliding way up high, overlooking the gorgeous city and surrounding forested areas to swooping down low amongst the feet of the locals.

The gameplay is very relaxing, and for a game like this, you need a good soundtrack, and they delivered. Although I do struggle to call it a game and would opt for an ‘experience’ instead. I have to say though, you won’t get the same experience with mouse and keyboard, so if you do consider picking this up, keep in mind that you’ll be better off using a gamepad of your choice.

As I said before, the game looks gorgeous. The lighting on the beautiful trees, coupled with the soothing sound of wind make for a charming and simplistic experience. I would have liked to have seen a more in depth story though, I feel as though they kept it quite brief, which is a shame as I could have easily put another couple of hours into this title. The flying mechanics are very intuitive with a gamepad and really make for a relaxing experience.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, and although this isn’t for all of you, it makes a nice break from more strenuous games or to give you a break from the stresses of day to day life and instead spread those wonderful wings and look up to the skies and see the world from a different perspective. And as the description says ‘what are human concerns to a bird anyway?’
