[ANIME] Basilisk The Ouka Ninja Scrolls Review

Author: Shinsuke Onishi

Producer: Kodansha

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Historical Fantasy,

Released: January 8th 2018

Basilisk The Ouka Ninja Scrolls starts 10 years after the original. Not that you need to watch that season to know what is going on in this one. You should however watch the original as it’s an incredible Ninja Anime. I really enjoyed the dark tone of the original, it was a refreshing take on the Ninja genre. This season however is bad news bears to all the fans of the original. This whole episode screams low budget to me. There are way too many still images on the screen and the animation is very minimalistic, not badly drawn by any means but there are very few special effects. This music isn’t too bad though.

The vibe I get from this Anime is very much an attempt to get younger audiences into watching instead of actually pleasing the fans of the previous season. Easily trying to be it’s own version of Boruto or Naruto. The strangest part is that it’s still trying to keep some of the mature themes and I say that loosely as the main characters are all children and there is a weird air to everything in that they are being overly sexualised. Perfect for the creeps I guess.

The biggest clue is that the main adults of the Ninja clan are more than happy to have a brother and sister go to town on each other just to keep the bloodline strong or at a worst case scenario get a parent and child to have a go on each other. It’s all just a bit bizarre and I can’t understand why they went in this direction for the new season. The only thing left for me to say is that a character summed up this Anime perfectly. Below average at best.

As you have probably guessed my rating is going to be a 4.5/10 and that’s me being generous. It’s such a shame as I was excited to hear of a second season but just do yourselves a favour, skip this and go watch the original season of Basilisk, you won’t be disappointed.

Why have they done this? - Mamushi
